Swedish classics on Djurgården

At Villa Godthem the classic Swedish restaurant kitchen takes centre stage. Here we serve dishes that have been passed down through generations, from our plank steak and hand-rolled meatballs to fish, shellfish and Swedish flavours in season.

Our head chef Antonio Molina looks after the classic kitchen with respect for the craft and the ingredients. Recipes evolve, seasons change and new dishes find their way onto the menu, but the roots always remain.

At Villa Godthem the classic Swedish restaurant kitchen lives on through dishes such as our plank steak – grilled sirloin, haricots verts, baked tomato, bacon, béarnaise, red wine sauce and pommes duchesse. And our hand-rolled meatballs with cream sauce, lingonberries, pickled cucumber and mashed potato.

History

A villa with over 150 years of history

The story of Villa Godthem begins in 1874.

That was the year the distinctive merchant's villa on Djurgården was completed, built as a private residence for the celebrated opera singer Carl Johan Uddman.

And the name? As the story goes, Uddman had one evening done something most unusual for him: walked the whole way home from the Opera. When he finally stepped through the door, he is said to have exclaimed, exhausted:

“I have WALKED home!”

The name stuck.

With the Stockholm Exhibition of 1897, Villa Godthem began its life as a restaurant. Ever since, people have gathered here for lunches and dinners, romances and business, weddings, birthdays and some of life's greatest moments.

More than a century later, the story continues.

The garden

Villa Godthem is nestled in the greenery of Djurgården, beside the Djurgårdsbrunn canal and only a short walk from some of Stockholm's most visited cultural and entertainment destinations.

Here the city feels close and far away at the same time.

When the season allows, life moves out into the garden. There is room for long lunches after a walk, a glass in the afternoon sun and dinners that carry on into the evening, surrounded by greenery and the life of Djurgården.

Whether you come for lunch, for dinner or simply to sit down for a while, the setting is as much a part of the experience as the house and the food.

When winter comes to Djurgården, the fires are lit in Villa Godthem's old salons.

Here we lay out a classic Swedish Christmas buffet full of traditions, craft and the flavours that belong to Christmas. All served in the merchant's villa where guests have gathered around the tables for over a century.

Afternoon tea on Djurgården

An afternoon on Djurgården is allowed to take its time.

At Villa Godthem we serve afternoon tea in our historic salons – with sandwiches, freshly baked scones, pastries and sweets alongside selected teas and coffee.

Settle in after a walk around Djurgården, gather the family or your friends, and let the afternoon continue in one of Stockholm's most storied villas.

And for anyone who wants to make the moment a little more festive, a glass of champagne is of course available.

Det må kännas långt till jul, men de bästa datumen runt julbordet brukar gå först.

I vår gamla grosshandlarvilla dukar vi återigen upp ett klassiskt svenskt julbord, med smaker och traditioner som hör julen till. För er som redan nu vet att julen ska firas hos oss är det hög tid att säkra årets datum.

Vi söker fyra erfarna kockar till vårt kök på Djurgården.
Hos oss får du arbeta med klassisk svensk matlagning, fina råvaror och gediget mathantverk. Från à la carte och större sällskap till event och vårt traditionsenliga julbord.
Vi söker dig som är trygg i köket, trivs när tempot är högt och vill bli en långsiktig del av vårt team.
Tjänsterna är tillsvidareanställningar med start enligt överenskommelse, med möjlighet att börja inför julbordssäsongen i mitten av november.
